The strength of Gawker Media lies in the diversity of our talents and the fluid collaboration between team members. We Are Gawker Media gives you an inside look at who we are and what we do behind the scenes.
In this first installment of We Are Gawker Media, I spoke with our Head of Creative Services, Keelin Linehan, about her life, interests, and time at the company:
You recently moved to San Francisco, but where were you born/raised?
I was born and raised in beautiful Stonington, CT.
Where did you work before coming to Gawker Media?
I worked for Saks Fifth Avenue designing their packaging. Snowflake holiday bags, anyone? How did I end up here?
What are your day-to-day tasks like at Gawker Media?
I email - in bed in the morning and in bed at night. In those emails, I ask that the nocturnal members of the team be at work on time and, on occasion, request they bring me donuts when they aren't. I demand client approval of custom ads that should be going live soon and organize ad ops and creative so we're all on the same page regarding the chaos that comes with 40+ campaigns running at any given time. I try to make people feel like work isn't the most horrible part of their day and want them to know I'm on their side.
What do you enjoy about your current role at Gawker Media?
My current role is pretty all-encompassing. I suppose that happens when working for a smallish company and the hats continue multiplying but the heads aren't so quick to catch up. I enjoy organizing different teams to work together and get something accomplished on time and done well. Knowing what I now do about ad serving, ad tracking, the technical side of the sites, the sales process and, of course, creative is something I certainly couldn't fathom 3 years ago. To help work those problems out for such a progressive company is quite the honor. Seriously. I'm also just sick at my job so that's cool.
What is the best thing you have ever done in your life?
Tough one. I think the thing that has served me best is helping my mom make dinner when I was little. Cooking calms me down and I genuinely enjoy arriving home at night and making dinner. Maybe it's the frantic chopping of vegetables that soothes me…although it could also be the wine. Everyone needs an outlet, right?
What can you not leave the home without?
The obvious, honest answer is my phone. But the other honest, and to some people obvious, answer is mascara. This sounds like an interview for Elle Magazine.
If you could be anyone past or present, who would it be?
Blanche Devereaux.
I hear you love to eat, what're the three foods you couldn't live without?
Stuffed peppers (MY stuffed peppers), falafel sandwiches from Oasis in Williamsburg, oysters with mignonette sauce.
What's your favorite part about the internet?
I think the immediacy of the internet has proven itself both a blessing and the bane of my existence. Since I work out of San Francisco, the internet has allowed me to interact with Gawker Media's NYC headquarters all day, every day and see all of your shining happy faces even when I'm trying to escape you! But it's enabled me the lifestyle I wanted for myself - on the west coast - and that's something that can't be said for many careers.
[UPDATE: Keelin has recently left Gawker Media to pursue an exciting new life in San Francisco. She's sorely missed and we wish her the best!]
