This week I sat down with Ben Rosen, our trusty and personable Ad Ops Coordinator, for a chat about everything unrelated to advertising and trafficking.
Hey Ben! Can you give us a rundown of your life. Just the basics, like where you're from and who was your favorite Sesame Street character?
Okay well. I'm Ben Rosen, 6' 2", 170 pounds. Born March 21, 1986 (Age 25 and 10 months) inside Sinai Hospital, Baltimore MD. I never really had a favorite Sesame Street character. I just enjoyed the whole gang and their antics. However my favorite Muppet is easy, Fozzy. Wacka wacka!
You're a serious fan of everything Baltimore related. What're your top 3 things about your hometown?
There's actually a lot more to Baltimore than The Wire and the "crabcakes and football." It's an immensely diverse region with a small town vibe and an underground rock scene that has been compared to New York in the 90's. The people are wonderful and it's one of the most enchanting cities I've ever known. If you're going to twist my arm and I have to pick three things, I'd go with: Ravens, crabcakes, and The Wire.
Who were your heroes growing up?
Cal Ripken Jr. to name one. I don't think that's a Baltimore specific hero either. The man showed up to work every day for 2,632 straight days...I've probably missed 2,632 days of work. He's also the reason I throw side-armed. I should throw a side-armed party. I'll figure out what that means later.
Do you like heros (the food)?
[Ben misheard me] You mean do I like burritos stuffed with cottage cheese? No. Very much no. I worked for a Greek guy once...they're always trying to pawn those things off on you. Have you ever seen a Greek person actually eating a gyro? Exactly.
I have actually, but I was referring to the "hero" sandwich…I was trying to make a play on words.
Oh this is awkward…let's just move on.
Good Idea…You were voted Baltimore Comedy Factory's funniest person of 2010, where do you get your material?
Thanks for the plug, Quinton! I guess that's like me asking you "Where do you get your questions?" It's just there. People tend to think that jokes are like stray cats, floating around in space, hiding behind grocery store dumpsters just ready for anyone to grab them. That's not really the case. Material is everywhere - sure - but it's the discipline and creativity to sit down and write a clever joke on your topic that's really difficult. Yes, I know cats don't float around in space.
What's the best thing you've ever done in life?
I wrote a short play back in high school that was performed by a group of students. My dad was in the audience, nearly in tears from laughter. It was the hardest that I've ever made him laugh (intentionally) and it felt amazing. Our relationship prior was based around lectures on my dumbassedness, but that was a meaningful turning point. I also had a pretty good cheeseburger the other day.
Where do you see yourself in 5 days? 5 years?
I'll be having dinner with my Nana in 5 days....ladies. As far as 5 years goes, that's real hit or miss for me. It's either fame and fortune or Ben's Whiskey and Crab Shanty. The secret to the extra meat in our crabs is that we genetically engineer them to have more legs. No stealies. It's funny, in fifth grade I was asked this same question. I had no idea how to answer it then and I don't know how to answer it now. Maybe in 5 years I'll know.
What're your favorite websites right now?
Gawker, Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Deadspin, Jalopnik, Jezebel, io9, and Kotaku. Did I keep my job? Also I tweet sometimes (@Rosen)! Lastly, hashtagmom, which is a service that calls your mom (or anyone you'd like) and reads your Foursquare check-in aloud to them.
